How this is calculated

Income Tax on self-employed profits uses the same Personal Allowance and rate bands as employed income: £12,570 tax-free (tapered away between £100,000 and £125,140), then 20% up to £50,270, 40% up to £125,140, and 45% above. Class 4 National Insurance is charged at 6% on profits between £12,570 and £50,270, and 2% above that. Mandatory Class 2 NI was abolished from April 2024 for anyone with profits above £7,105 — your State Pension record is protected automatically. Below that threshold, you can choose to pay voluntary Class 2 at £3.65 a week (£189.80 a year) to keep building your record. This tool doesn't include Payments on Account, which HMRC may require in advance for the following tax year.
